Planning for Work

work_exp2.jpgWe’re just beginning to put together our programme for work experience week for current year 10 students, though the week will be in October (19th – 23rd) after they’ve moved up to Y11.

We always encourage students to find their own placements but this year a combination of a big year group and the current economic climate makes us think we may have to work a little harder this year to ensure everyone benefits from this vital learning experience.

Therefore if, where you or your friends and family work, you feel you may be able to place a student, please contact Mrs Boots here at the college and she’ll then ensure the necessary health & safety checks are carried out and we’ll endeavour to match places and students as best we can.

Here’s what some of our current Y11 students, from 11GIW, said about their placings earlier in this academic year:

Our time at Shirland Golf Club helped us build our communication skills and being treated like adults made us feel respected and so we naturally gave respect back. There were no downsides to the week as everyone kept smiling and all of our tasks were enjoyable. At the end of the week we were both offered jobs there and we accepted with pleasure. Jordan Dunn & Daniel Bunting

Working at Dalestorth Primary School was an enjoyable and interesting experience. It gave me a good idea of what it would be like to be a primary school teacher and help me decide if this is the career path I want to follow. I gained the skill of keeping young children on task in ways that meant I didn’t have to raise my voice. I can now use this skill when I’m coaching within my BTEC coaching. Beth Garner

My work experience at Boots the Chemist was enjoyable in that I met some great people who treated me maturely and with respect. At the end of the week I received several prizes as a thank you for my hard work. During the week I learned that jobs aren’t as simple as they look. Alice Shelton

I really enjoyed learning how to fix various problems with phone lines and which tools to use to sort the problems out. I also like the fact that I was travelling around to different places. I went to a cattery, care homes, industrial estates, farms and a mental health centre. Daniel Bunting (at BT Openreach)

Working at White Meadow Furniture was a beneficial experience. The best thing was meeting all the different people and seeing all the different jobs they do. I worked in the offices where the sales reps ordered materials after taking orders from customers. Abbie Place

work_exp1.jpgAll students in Key Stage 4 and Year 12 have the opportunity to undertake a Work Experience Programme.  The placements on offer are numerous and varied.  It is important that students gain insight into the world of work both via working away from school and by working with industrialists as part of the normal curriculum.  In this respect we have an excellent relationship with David Nieper – a local company who encourage our students to use their industrial machines to make up clothing designs for GCSE Textiles.  Our Key Stage 4 curriculum is very varied and provides for many company based investigations and we are indebted to many other companies for their support.
