Alfreton Grange Arts College benefits from an active and supportive governing body, many of whom are parents of students currently studying with us or who have children who attended in the recent past.

 

Recent Examples of the college making a positive contribution in the wider community
 
Examples of the wider community using our facilities:

St Martin’s Church (Alfreton) – Hosted their pantomime in Feb 09 – in new theatre

Sixth Form Band Night involving students and visitors from a number of schools – Hosted Autumn 08 in new arts centre

Alfreton Inner Wheel – Hosted their brass band concert in new theatre in Autumn 08

Hosted X-Factor style event organised by Derbyshire Constabulary involving schools in Amber Valley – in theatre.

Members of the wider community included in the audience at a number of events including Blackheart Concert / Songwriting workshop and Christmas Carol Concert

Helen O’Grady Drama academy use our drama room each week for U11’s.

Shirland Primary School using our videoing facilities for news style reports about crime in the area.

Formal launch event was for members of the Community who’d helped the school achieve specialist status. Used to showcase talent and new facilities

Amber Valley’s MP hosting the constituency’s Veterans Event here for the first time in our theatre having played at the event for several years

East Midlands Martial Arts and Derbyshire Tae-Kwan-Do use our facilities.

ADASC FC use our gymnasia and football pitches. 

Derbyshire Constabulary use our Dance Studio to work with youngsters out of school hours.

Examples of visiting the community and/or making the community more aware of our work:

Band played at Alfreton Town Council’s Christmas Tree / Crib unveiling.

Christmas carol tour taking in several infant and junior schools, special school, shopping centres and old people’s homes

The new college website iincorporates videos of events and shows the ethos of the organisation.

Band played at Mayor’s Gala at Woodbridge School.

Examples of Community artists visiting the college to work with students:

Artist Sophie Gill visited us over the winter to carry out three commissions. A living willow sculpture, a totem pole and banners for the dance studio

Circus Fudge visited 6th formers to teach circus skills

Storyteller engaged to work with Y7 students on creative thinking (PLTS) project (Autumn 08) to help embed new national curriculum at the college

Blackheart songwriting workshop

The New English Contemporary Ballet Company visited to hold a Y9 workshop

Subsidised ‘taster’ lessons for students to learn instruments with peripatetic teachers

Examples of working with our feeder school community:

Wizard of Oz production – singing workshops for young students at four feeder primaries, many of whom are appearing in our school show in March

Installed webcams at all 16 feeder schools in preparation for being able to do collaborative work and video conferencing

Made a film with Shirland Primary School about the history of the village
