Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 & 9)

Years 7 and 8 are taught in ability groups for English and Mathematics.   Science, Technology, French, Art, Music, Drama, Creative Studies, Dance, Geography, History, P.E., I.C.T., R.E. and Learning to Learn are all taught in mixed-ability tutor groups.

Year 9 are taught in ability groups in English, Mathematics and Science.  

Throughout Key Stage 3 Technology staffing is rotated to ensure that students receive specialist tuition in all areas.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11)


Key Stage 4 has an extremely varied and flexible provision.  In Years 10 and 11 English and Mathematics are taught in ability sets.  PSE/Citizenship,  P.E. and R.E. are also delivered to all students.  Physics, Chemistry and Biology are also offered as full GCSE Options as is Science.

There are 6 “Options” available to our Year 10 and Year 11 students.  There are GCSE groups in I.C.T., French, Geography, History, Art, Music, Drama, Dance,  Food, Textiles, Graphics, Resistant Materials and Child Development.  All our students follow a GCSE or BTEC course in at least one of the following – Art, Music, Drama, Dance, Graphics or Media.

We also offer BTEC Sport, BTEC Media, CoPE (Certificate in Personal Effectiveness) and Learning Support.

Level 1 and 2 courses are available to our students via our partnership in the Alfreton Vocational Academy (AVA).  We currently offer Beauty Therapy, Engineering, Motor Vehicle Engineering and Construction.

We also offer a Fast Track Young Apprenticeship in Engineering.  We are the lead school for both Engineering and Motor Vehicle Engineering within our consortium.

We also offer a flexible personalised curriculum for a small number of students delivered, partly, off site.

Post-16 Curriculum

We offer extensive provision across a variety of levels :

Level 2 Provision on our Main Site 16+ Centre - GCSEs in English, Mathematics, Science, Law, Sociology, BTEC Media, BTEC Performing Arts, CCE Nursing and Key Skills.

Level 3 provision on our Main Site 16+ Centre – Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Art, Music, Drama, Psychology, Sociology, History, P.E., Technology, Law, General Studies, Graphics, Technology and Textiles.

Through AVA and other partners we also offer Post-16 vocational courses in Motor Vehicle (Level 1), Construction (Level 1), Beauty Therapy (Levels 1 & 2), Engineering (Levels 2 & 3), Plumbing (Level 2), Electrical Engineering (Level 2).
